What the movie genre wheel decides for you
Every genre on the wheel covers a broad slice of what's streamable on any platform right now. Land on Thriller and you've got everything from psychological slow-burns to high-speed chase films. Land on Documentary and you've got a reason to finally watch something you've been putting off for months. The wheel doesn't pick the film — it picks the direction, which is usually the hardest part.
If the result doesn't excite anyone in the room, hide it using the eye-toggle in the entry panel and spin again. Hidden entries stay in the list but are skipped during spins, so you can bring them back later without re-typing anything.
Adjusting the genre list before you spin
The 12 genres are a starting point. The entry panel sits right next to the wheel and lets you change the list in a few seconds.
- Remove a genre: hit the X next to any entry. Useful if your group has already ruled out Horror for the evening.
- Add a genre: type it into the text field and press Enter. Add "Western", "Sports", "Crime" — whatever's missing for your taste.
- Weight a genre: change the numeric weight on any entry. Set Comedy to 3 and Drama to 1 and Comedy will take up a proportionally larger slice of the wheel and win more often.
- Bulk import: paste a newline-separated list into the import area to replace the whole list at once — handy if your group pre-agreed on a shortlist.
If you want ideas beyond the 12 defaults, the Ideas button generates additional genre suggestions contextually. It's a quick way to surface sub-genres or niche categories you might not have thought of.
Running a movie night vote with the wheel
One common setup: trim the wheel down to three or four genres everyone is genuinely open to, then spin. Because the result is random and visible to the whole group, there's nothing to argue with. The wheel picked it.
When the winner dialog appears after a spin, you can share the result directly to WhatsApp or X, or copy it to clipboard and paste it into a group chat. The share sends the genre name and the page URL — enough for anyone not in the room to see what was picked and load the same wheel themselves.
Turn on Remove Winner below the wheel if you want to run a bracket-style elimination: each spin removes the winning genre, so you work through them in a random order until one is left. Useful for longer movie marathons where you're planning the whole night's schedule up front.
More wheels for film and TV decisions
If you land on Animation and want to narrow it further, the anime wheel picks from specific anime titles and series. For a wider look at what's available across entertainment categories, the Entertainment hub has wheels covering shows, music, and more. You can also build a completely custom picker from scratch on the wheel generator — load it with specific films, directors, or streaming platforms instead of genres.
