What is the wheel of colours?
This is a browser-based spinner pre-loaded with twelve colour names arranged as equal slices. Each spin is a random, weighted-fair draw — no colour has an advantage over any other by default. The result appears in a winner dialog the moment the wheel stops, and the pick is logged in the session history below the wheel so you can see every colour that has come up without keeping notes yourself.
The twelve colours cover the full visible spectrum (the classic ROY G BIV sequence), plus Pink, Brown, Black, White, and Gray for practical coverage. That makes it useful for any situation where the full range of common colour names matters — not just the rainbow.

How to customise your colour wheel
The twelve default colours are a solid starting point, but the entry panel next to the wheel gives you full control.
- Add colours: type any colour name into the text field and press Enter. Add as many as you like — the wheel redraws instantly to accommodate new slices.
- Remove colours: click the X beside any entry to delete it, or hit Clear to wipe the list and start fresh.
- Bulk import: paste a newline-separated list of colour names into the bulk-import area to add dozens at once. Useful if you want to load a specific paint brand's range, a set of Pantone names, or hex-code labels.
- Adjust weights: each entry has a numeric weight field. Set Red to 3 and every other colour to 1 if you want Red to come up roughly three times as often. The slice sizes on the wheel update to reflect the new proportions visually.
- Per-entry colour override: by default the wheel uses whichever of the 16 palette presets you've chosen. But you can set a specific hex colour on any individual entry so that slice matches the actual colour it represents. A red slice for Red, a blue slice for Blue — it makes the wheel instantly readable.
- Hide entries: the eye toggle beside each entry keeps it in your list but skips it during spins. Useful if you want to park Indigo and Violet temporarily without deleting them.
Beyond the entry list, the Customize panel lets you choose from 16 named palette presets — Carnival, Sunset, Ocean, Candy, Berry, Forest, Neon, Aurora, Tropical, Monochrome, Coral Reef, Citrus, Midnight, Earth, Royal, and Bubblegum. Hit Shuffle colors to reorder the active palette's hues across the slices without changing which palette you're on.
Spin duration is adjustable between 3, 5, and 10 seconds. Pointer style can be Pin, Arrow, or Classic. Font labels on the wheel use either Fredoka or Plus Jakarta Sans. Three win sounds, a selectable spin-sound, and a countdown sound (including a Silent option) round out the sensory customisation.
Spin the color wheel fairly — how the randomness works
Every spin runs a random draw that is independent of all previous spins. The wheel doesn't "remember" that Red hasn't come up in a while and compensate — each result is fresh. If all entries carry the default weight of 1, every colour has exactly the same chance on every spin. If you raise a weight, that entry's slice grows and it wins proportionally more often, exactly as you'd expect from looking at the wheel.
The Shuffle on Spin toggle randomises the order of slices at the start of each spin. This doesn't change the underlying fairness — it just means the visual position of each colour shifts each time, which looks dynamic and prevents anyone from predicting where the pointer will land based on the wheel's resting position from the last spin.
Session history under the wheel records every winner in reverse order. If you're running a colour-theory exercise that requires all twelve colours to appear, use Remove Winner mode: each winning colour is eliminated after it's drawn, so you'll work through the full set without duplicates.
The AI colour suggestions feature
Hit the Ideas button in the entry panel and the tool generates additional colour-name suggestions relevant to your current list. If you've narrowed the wheel to warm colours only, the AI tends to suggest more warm shades. If you're working with gem-tone names like Sapphire and Emerald, it leans into that vocabulary. It's a fast way to expand your list without manually typing every option — especially handy when you're building a themed wheel for a specific art project or palette exploration.
You can accept individual suggestions, then fine-tune weights and per-entry colours from there. For more general randomisation projects beyond colour, the wheel generator lets you build a custom wheel from scratch with any entries you like.
How this compares to other random colour tools
Google's built-in colour picker returns a hex code on a gradient surface — great for choosing a precise shade, but it doesn't give you a named colour and it doesn't give you the theatre of a spinning wheel. Dedicated hex-code generators produce values like #3E7B4F that require colour-theory knowledge to interpret quickly. This wheel of colours works in named language that anyone understands immediately: "Blue," "Violet," "Brown."
